My late brother, Ian Middleton, was an accomplished church organist and clavichord player, and frequently gave recitals in São Paulo, Brazil, where he settled and died. He enjoyed his piano lessons rather more than I did. He suffered from Perthes Hip joint disease as a child and spent a year strapped to his bed to stretch the affected limb. Doctors at that time advised against strong physical activities for sufferers. He bought and exported a clavichord to Brazil, where he performed mainly Baroque and Classical music.
